Proud to become an American Citizen

Last monday I officially became a citizen. My daughter Luz Mariel and I went together to the ceremony. I feel very proud of becoming an American Citizen and I pray that God will keep this country close to him; just like it was intended by the founders of this country. "One Nation, under GOD, indivisible, with Liberty (of religion), and JUSTICE for ALL." God bless America!

Dios bendiga a America!

The magic loop...

I decided to try the magic loop techinique for the sleeves of my sweater, so I can knit them on the round instead of having to sew them later. It was a nightmare. They came out wrong 2 or 3 times. I was using cheap circular needles and then I read a blog where the person advice to use good needles with flexible cords. So, I got a pair of ADDI turbo's and voila! What a difference! The stiches flow through the needles! It is not hard at all. Now if you try this technique with your sleeves, make sure you cast on 2 stiches less than what the instructions call for. Since you are knitting in the round you don't need the two stiches on the sides that are usually left for sewing the piece. Next, I would like to try the two circular needle technique to see wich one is easier. So far, the magic loop had worked fine.

Me salió mal 2 o 3 veces.

To knit your own sweaters or to buy them... That is the question...

I have been struggleling with this question. With such an owesome sales at the stores and such a gourgeous sweaters on display... Why to kill my self knitting a sweater, which usually takes me one or two months... when I can go and buy it for less than $20 and... with no mistakes on it!

The answer came to me yesterday as I was shopping at JC Penney's. Most sweaters there are made out of Acrylic. If you want nice, wool sweater or other finer materials such as Alpaca, you would have to pay a fortune (if you are even able to find them) or... make them yourself. So there you go, I feel much better knowing that there is a practical reason to make my sweaters instead of buying them.

I still have the big problem of not finishing them fast enough. The winter is already here and I need them now !!! Rachel needs turtle necks. So, I desined a combination of guernsey and fisherman style turtleneck for her but I haven't have time to even start it.

I am knitting the sleeves of my own lime green sweater, which I wish I would have made Small and not medium since I lost 15 pounds and the medium size now fits big. And.... I promised a sweater to Mariel (my teen age daughter) made out of the softest wonderful Cotton Cashmere by Debbie Bliss. That one is also on hold.

I feel like the Christmas presents are interfering with my knitting too much. I am making 3 scarfs right now. I finished a dog swater. But I don't know if I am going to be able to finish all these presents on time. I doubt it. Besides, this is not really what I want to knit. I really wish I could finish my sweater !!! So I can keep going with my kid's sweaters...

The problem is... I should have started my Christmas presents long time ago... and now I am knitting agaisnt the clock... I wonder if other knitters are in the same boat ?

Tejer mis propios sueters or comprarlos... he ahí el dilema...

No pienso desacerlo.

God is in control to the detail !

My friend Luz just went through a terrible experience; she had to get surgery on her scalp to remove a thumor. It was a very scary situation for her and her family. Thank God, the thumor was not malign, but she was depressed after the cirgury as they shaved the front area of her head and she partially lost her beautiful long hair.
Months ago, I started a baby sweater for no reason, with no pattern, I just grabbed some baby yarn and my circular needles and started to knit in garther stitch. I ended up putting it away after a couple of weeks. Last week I wanted to make some leg warmers and needed my needles so I decided to bind off my half-way through-baby sweater. The result was was an interesting rectangle that with a few stitches turned into a perfect headband. I added some beads for decoration and voilá !

Turns out the size was perfect for Luz's head and big enough to cover the bandage. She loves it!

It amazes me how God takes care of little details like this as He used my knitting to bless someone in such a practical way... when I wasn't even planning in doing so.

I am so exited that my knitting could be useful and help my dear friend to feel so much better and go out without having people staring at her.

Thank you God for taking care of the little details... That just shows us the infinite power of your love... I praise you!

My mom came to visit...

My mom came to visit last week and I was not able to knit much or do anything. She loves to shop when she comes here, so I was pretty bussy driving her to the stores... But we had a great time and she made owesome buys !!

Classic Elite- Tweed 2 Collection Ribbed Sweater

This is my current project. It is a ribbed sweater from Classic Elite Tweed 2. Of course, I decided that I hate sewing so much, that for now on I am knitting everything on the round. The drawback of this is, when I make a mistake (like last night), I have to go back 300 stitches to fix it... :-( not fun... I hate to frog ! In fact, if the mistake does not bother me too much I usually leave it there as a personal touch of art... But in this case, the mistake was in the cable and I knew it was going to bother me forever... So I went back and fixed it. The yarn is supposed to be Sky Tweed but I am using ROWAN Yorkshire Tweed DK in my favorite color LIME GREEN and I absolutely love it !

Sirdar Spree top finished !

Just like the other sweater, this top was knitted in Sirdar Spree which I love because it took me only one week to make this top. This is a very chunky cotton that knits up so fast, vs. the Crystal top that took me two months...

Sirdar Spree Sweater finished !

Now, this is a sweater I started last summer! I finished it a while ago and it has been sitting there waiting to be sewn. But, since I hate sewing the pieces together, it took me a while to get to it. Until my finishing week came and I had no excuse. :-)

Crystal Top is finished!

My Knit one week- finish one week method has paid off. Here is the Gedifra Crystal top already finished. the bad news is: I am going to have to reduce the sholder strap 1 inch to get it to fit just right. Which I am not looking forward to.

Finishing week - Favorite project week

So, I have 3 projects that are finished that need to be put together and other 3 projects in process. At this point, all I want is to start working in my winter projects for which I have already purchased the yarn. I will post a picture soon...

Now, I decided that if I work in my favorite/hottest project one week and sacrifice myself the other week finishing, that would be a good combination to be able to get things done. So there you go, one week finish-finish-finish and the next one HAVE FUN!

Qué les parece?

New project

I got so tired of the Crystal top... I had to start something new. This top from Sirdar. This is the back of it. I took me only 3 days to complete it vs. 1 month per each side of the Crystal top...(see it in the "on the needle" section below). I can wait to finish it so I can keep going with my knitting life...

This month I went crazy buying yarn... and I mean crazy. I already have all of my fall and winter knitting projects, for the next 3 years.

Here they are!

Here they are for your enjoyment... my first pair of socks... Although not suitable for the winter, they were a hit in my husband's birthday. He really liked them.
They came out a tiny bit big, so I had to frog them in the toes and make them smaller.
I used Lion Brand yarn and 4 double pointed needles.
Although it was a fun project, I don't want to knit socks for while... It is a lot of work!

My fist pair of socks...

Hi guys, my computer crashed so I have not been able to post much for a while. Currently, I am very exited about my first pair of socks, for no reason, I started a baby sweater with a baby yarn I found in my stach, and I also started a shawl from my new book Lavish Lace. So, I have about 7 projects in progress... Crazy! I know...

I wanted to recomend to you an awesome book. I have been buying books in designing because I really want to start designing my own things. I got Knitwear Design, Design in Plain English, etc. Nice books but a little too complicated to get you started right away. Until I found KNIT IT NOW! Oh, what an awesome book! it has several paterns with variations for different gauges and it tells you how to desing in such a SIMPLE WAY, I am loving it!!! I have a couple of yarns awaiting for me to create something original with them... and I can't wait...

However, I am really really trying hard not to start anything else untiel I get at least 3 of my projects done.

My husband's birthday is in August 18, so the sock project is a priority !!! I hope to be able to fix my computer soon so I can post some pictures of my beatiful socks...

I am also painting and stenciling my living room, so that is taking really precious time from my knitting...

So long my dear spidery friends...

Hola !

After blocking the bag, I shaved it. And now it's ready! The bag is ready to go shopping and have some fun! I gave it to Theresa, (Rachel's program supervisor) as a thank you gift for everything she has done for us.

Out of the washer!

This my cutie right out of the washing machine and going through the blocking process. I cutted a piece of cardboard and placed in the bottom and then stuffed it with plastic bags. I love the groovy effect of the shaggy fur around the border ! I am having second thoughts about giving it away... LOL The final measurements were 8.5" x 3.5" for the bottom and 8.5 x 6.5" for each side. Which means that measurements decreased 2.5 to 3" in average (about 25%)

My first felted project

Hello friends, this is my first felted bag. Well, it is not felted yet. I got into the bag fever because of my friends at Creative Pursuits. I went the other day and saw the beautiful bags they were making and decided to knit my own. This particular bag is my version of the Sophie bag. It takes about 12 hours to complete this project. The pattern can be found free in the following web adress: http://www.magknits.com/warm04/patterns/sophie.htm
I added some red fur on the top for a personal touch. The measurements before felting are: 10 x 4" for the rectangle bottom of the bag and 12 3/4" x 9 1/2 for the semi-triangle formed by each side of the bag. I am afraid that the part with the fur will not felt so well since it is made of nylon and not wool... But we will see what happens tomorrow... Stay tune for my first felting adventure...

http://www.magknits.com/warm04/patterns/sophie.htm

I made this bracelet today for Rachel in my beading class at Bead Connection. It has different animals hanging from it. It is going to be her graduation present.

We had Rachel preschool graduation last Monday June 13... For most parents it was just a cute event. For us, it was the celebration of a miracle...She has been accepted in kindergarthen in a regular Ed classroom.

Rachel with her new summer top.

What have I been doing??? This... For same crazy reason, I threw aside the projects that I was working on, and started this top for my little Rachel. I used a Sirdar pattern for the measurements but I included my own lace pattern. I love to design and experiment. It is so much more fun that following somebody else's ideas... Some day I hope to design my own stuff. In fact, the baby sweater that I am working on is my first creation. I am still working on it...but right now I just feel like knitting summery tops like this one. It took me 6 days to finish it.

Qué qué he estado haciendo? Me encanta diseñar y experimentar.

So much to knit, so little time...

All of the suden I started two more projects... The spree sweater is in sewing process... and I have a stach calling my name... What to do ???? Today I got knew magazines and I had such a great time looking at them, more ideas came to my head. STOP! I need to finish at least two of the projects that I have before starting one more... I will really try to stick to one project at a time...

Monday, May 16, 2005

I also got the yarn that I got from E bay. Best deal ever !!! 10 skeins of Patons Cotton for only $ 3.50 plus $ 4 of shipping!!! I love E-Bay !!!

I feel like it is Christmas! I got my patterns from Sirdar and the skein that I needed to finish my Spree Sweater! I am so exited! I don't even know which pattern to knit first...

Me wearing my new top

Here is a picture of me wearing my Van Dyke Stitch Top, believe it or not it was my little Rachel that took this picture.

I made two modifications to the original pattern by Thaki. The shoulder strap was supposed to be a cord, I left it streight because I like the wide strap so it can cover my bra... Also, I made a shell edge using this patter of chochet: *skip 2sts, 3dc in next st, 2dc in next st, skip 2 sts, sl st in next st, rep from *. I aded this edge because I felt that edge needed something else, and also to make the top a bit longer. :-)

The top if finally ready !!! This top can be made with any chunky cotton. I used two strands of Bernat Cotton Tots held together. It took me two weeks to get it done...(Rachel took this picture) My blusa está por fin lista!

Current Project: This is my current project. Don't you guys just hate blocking??? I wander if other people hate it as much as I do. This is a summer top that I saw on a Thaki yarns book. I was very frustrated because the lace pattern did not work out. Sure enough there was a mistake in the pattern. Luckily, I found the pattern in the internet for free with all of the corrections. It is available at http://secure.elann.com/ShowFreePattern.asp?Id=7024

This is the other part of the mothe's day present. It is a scrap book album. I am going to keep a track of all of my projects with it. I plan to include pictures of my projects, information such as material used, (maybe a copy of the pattern), day that I started the project, day that I finished the project, etc... I am so exited !!! I can wait to start working on it!

Mother's day present. I got me these beautiful yarns for mother's day. It is a bunch of Sirdar yarns; Spree (chunky cotton), Breeze and Pure Cotton. I plan to make some beatiful tops with it. I got patterns for these yarns at marvis.com an e-store located in England. These yarns where purchased here in town at 30% off, Woowhoo!

Beaded bag. This is bag goes with a lace top. It is made with pure silk. It was a joy to work with this project. I designed the bag with the left over yarn after making the top.

This is the poncho as seen in the cover of KNIT IT Magazine. It was my first succesful lace project.

These are Rachel's crochet chicken slippers. I made them with Caron acrylic. She used them so much that now they have a huge hole in the sole... LOL

This is a bag that I made with chunky cotton last summer (2004). It was also presented at the Kern County Fair but did not win any prizes. :-(

This is a cute vest that I knitted after the cabled sweater, maybe in 2003. It is pattern from a book called "25 Easy sweaters for the brand new knitter" or something like that. It is also made with Red Heart.

This is a cabled sweater that I made for Rachel about 3 years ago. (2002) It is a Debbie Bliss design and I made it from cheap acrylic yarn. It was my first serious project in years. What I like about Debbie is that their patterns for kids are intended to be worn loosely, thus allowing the child to wear the item for several years. This sweater still fits!

This is Rachel wearing the beaded top. She loved it !!!

This is a beaded top that I made for Rachel last Summer. It got 2nd place in the Fair for children's clothing cathegory. It is made out of Sugar Cream Cotton yarn and the design is mine.

In my yard in Shafter June 2002

My very own knitting blog

Hello every one. I am so exited to be able to share my knitting with all of you. I still have to figure out how to insert pictures and all that... but hopefuly it won't take me too long to tackle it. Welcome!
